Day in Portsmouth

Friday, 23 September 2016

Our destination today is Portsmouth, not for any specific reason but we're unlikely to have the opportunity again. We have a trip booked with Country Express Coaches departing Southampton at 08:30 and returning from Portsmouth at 13:55. The coach was punctual and followed a convoluted route out of the Old Town area. I had expected a major road connecting these two cities and was surprised when most of the journey was along narrow suburban streets. We eventually joined a Freeway were we made very good time.

When we arrived in Portsmouth we were attracted to a massive tower on the waterfront. The Emirates Spinnaker Tower dominates the Gunwharf Quays an extensive retail and dining re-development. We considered going up in the tower and decided against it. Possibly the wrong decision. We spent time exploring the area and wandered off along the Millennium Boulevard and found our way to the Cathedral Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, commonly known as Portsmouth Cathedral. The cathedral evolved in stages with the original chapel dating back to 1185.

Found our way back to the Gunwharf and on impulse walked into a casino thinking to have drink and a light meal. It took a while to adjust to the dim interior and couldn't see any food on offer. I approached the bar and ordered two glasses of Pepsi - yes last of the big spenders. The barmaid asked if I was gaming. What difference does that make ?? If you're gaming, soft-drinks are free. Suddenly I'm gaming !! Did dig out some coins but couldn't find a machine that I could operate. Drank the Pepsi and left.

Back on the coach to Southampton and as we walked back to the Hotel past the Ikea store, had the notion to have an early dinner. We both had a satisfying meal for a total of under £10. Not bad for a 'proper' meal when the hotel's restaurant charges £9.95 for their Cod and Chips.
The FitBit has recorded just short of 14,000 paces today, not a bad total for a pair of old wrinklies.

Wishing you good health and safe travel.

Have a great day and stay well.
Cheers .. Tony
